Although whaling was practiced throughout all the islands of the Azores, Pico quickly became the main center of the azorean whaling complex. This itinerary unravels this narrative to you.
We start in the Whalers' Museum, originally a structure belonging to three whaling stations, which nowadays preserves the memory of those times. Here, you can learn more about whaling in the Azores through the various displayed objects, that tell you the story of the whalers and of all those who took part in this adventure.
Heading on to Centro de Artes e de Ciências do Mar, antiga fábrica da baleia SIBIL, construída com mecanismos inovadores para facilitar o processamento dos cachalotes.
Then we passed the quay at Lajes do Pico. When returning from sea, the whalers processed the sperm whale on the hauling ramp and the dismantling platform, located on this quay, also making use of the traols.
We end the day in Queimada Lookout, “looking out” for sperm whales in the sea, as former lookouts did, in the golden era of whaling in the Azores.
