On the north side of the island of Pico, the whaling industry settled in São Roque do Pico. To learn all about its history, we begin our tour at the Whaling Industry Museum. In 1946, the Fábrica das Armações Baleeiras Reunidas was set up here, the largest and most important sperm whale processing and transformation complex in the Azores, which operated until 1984.
Next, we visited Casa dos Sofias, an exhibition center that houses around 200 pieces carved from whale bone and teeth, offering a glimpse into the history of whaling through the art of scrimshaw.
