ITINERARY

RVU01COR

The island of Corvo, the smallest of the archipelago, stands out for the uniqueness of its customs and traditions, for its environmental richness and the remarkable diversity of materials from volcanic origin (basalts, trachytes, pumice, scorias, ignimbrites) in their natural state or transformed by the islanders.

The visit begins precisely in the Corvo Ecomuseum – Casa do Tempo, right in the center of Vila do Corvo. This space works as an introduction to the territory, providing information about the history of the island and its people through multimedia resources, which will motivate us to start our journey in discovering this territory, full of particularities.

We suggest taking a short walk along the center of Vila do Corvo, passing through some of the most emblematic places on the island, allowing the visitor to thoroughly appreciate this village, marked by the close proximity between the houses on very narrow streets.

We take a stop at the Corvo Wild Birds Interpretation Centre, an essential place for introducing the visitor to the practice of bird watching, an activity that places the island of Corvo as a site of great importance on an international level. Here, visitors can have access to several multimedia equipments, which display diverse content related to the Natural Park and the bird species of the Azores. We also have the opportunity to visit the last mill in Corvo, where the milling process of this island took place.

After lunch, we head to Miradouro do Portão, a viewpoint placed at 110 meters of altitude, where it is possible to identify most of the main points of interest in the island, including the typical windmills, one of the most emblematic symbols of Corvo.

We end the visit in yet another unforgettable viewpoint, the Miradouro do Caldeirão, where, on clear days, we are able to admire this caldera, located on top of the central volcano of the island of Corvo. This volcanic depression is occupied by a lagoon with some small volcanic cones in its interior, which are often compared by the azoreans to the 9 islands of the archipelago. We suggest the more adventurous visitors to take a walk around the Caldeirão, to fully enjoy this landscape and perhaps even be able to recognize some of the birds that inhabit this place, by their song.
