ITINERARY

RVI01PIC

What better way to understand and thoroughly experience Pico's wine production, than to starting with a visit to Lajido de Santa Luzia? We start by visiting the Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture Interpretation Centre, an exhibition space integrated into an old winery, located right in the center of a set of small black houses, that managed to maintain their traditional façade, in one of the most iconic areas of the island. Here, you will acquire some context on the history of wine production on the island.

Next, we immerse ourselves into the Winemaking Landscape of Lajido, where find a landscape characterized by several kilometers of basalt stone walls (curraletas), built with the purpose of protecting the vineyards from the sea breeze, in addition to several traces from the artisanal production of this very special wine.

By the sea, we can still find an old Tidal Well, built in an area where this type of construction was particularly necessary. It granted the population access to water, since there were no fountains, springs or streams nearby.

We continue along the coastal zone, following the “Rilheiras” walking trail, lines curiously engraved in the lava stone, testifying the passage of countless ox carts, which carried with large shipments, including wine barrels, in the past.

Still in Lajido, we make a mandatory stop in the old Forno dos Frades, a structure that is now in ruins, but whose magnificence proves how important this oven was for the production of brandy, another product that is a big part of the region's wine culture.

In the afternoon, we suggest choosing between the following experiences:

• Visit to the Azores Wine Company, founded in 2014 by António Maçanita, Filipe Rocha and Insula Vinus, Lda. End the day with a visit to the winery, where you can watch the current production process of the famous Pico wine, as well as having a special wine tasting and a gastronomic experience with endogenous products, in a combination of flavors that will exceed everyone's expectations.

• Visit to the Winery A Buraca, the perfect place to relive the history of the people of Pico, especially regarding the golden era of the “Verdelho” wine, in the parish of Santo António. Here, we have the opportunity to learn about the locals' habits and traditions, admire and buy typical handcrafted products, and also taste wines or regional delicacies.

• Wine tasting in Czar Winery Cellar, hosted by the producer Fortunato Garcia, where we can learn about the relation between Pico wine and the Czars of Russia, as we taste their unique wines, right in the cellar where they were produced.

We then delve into the Lajido Winemaking Landscape, where, in addition to the landscape marked by the several kilometers of basalt corrallets built with the aim of protecting the rossio vineyards from the sea, we will find several traces associated with the artisanal production of this very special wine.

By the sea, we can still find an old Poço de Maré, built in an area where this type of construction was particularly necessary, allowing the population access to water, given the lack of sources, springs or streams nearby.

We continue along the coastal area, following the “Rilheiras” pedestrian trail, curious lines marked in the lava flow, which prove the passage, in the past, of numerous oxcarts, with large shipments, including barrels of wine.
