ITINERARY

RVI01TER

The date on which the first vine was introduced in Terceira Island, known for the Verdelho Wine of Biscoitos, remains unknown. The need to take advantage of the volcanic terrain, unsuitable for cultivating cereals, led to the use of these areas, locally known as biscoitos, lagedos and lajidos, for vine culture. Wine production in Terceira, as in the other islands, ended up suffering consequences from the proliferation of different diseases and pests, resulting in the Verdelho of Biscoitos being practically eliminated.

After 20 years of neglect, Francisco Maria Brum was responsible for rehabilitating this production on the island: he committed himself to rebuilding the stone walls (currais), acquired abandoned vineyards, and started the first trials for cultivating vines in Fontinhas and Biscoitos.

The starting point for this itinerary is precisely the Wine Museum, created in 1990, on the centenary of Casa Agrícola Brum. Here the visitor can learn about the history of vineyards and wine in Terceira, from its production to the bottling process, as well as about the tradition of a family that has dedicated their life to wine production for five generations. Enjoy the wines of this century-old Production House.

We head for a short walk through the Biscoitos' Wine-growing Landscape, to contemplate the exuberant landscape, distinguished by its high aesthetic and cultural value, built with the strength and determination of the azoreans' ancestors.

To finish off, we suggest tasting wines produced in the unique landscape of Biscoitos, choosing one of the following options:

• A visit to the Biscoitos Wine Cooperative, where a large sum of the grapes from small local producers are transformed into wine. This visit can include a short walk through the vineyards that mark the surrounding landscape, as well as a tasting of wines produced here, one of the most outstanding wine-growing areas of the Azores.

• A visit to the Adega Costa Norte, from the producer Dimas Pires, who started this activity about 20 years ago, and dedicates himself to vine culture and to the production and distribution of wines. We suggest finishing off the day in his winery to taste his red or white wines and to get acquainted with his astonishing vineyards.

• A wine tasting in the small Adega Oliveira, founded in 2004, by Paulo Oliveira, who learned the techniques of wine production from his father. This small winery is well worth the visit to taste their wine and enjoy the landscape and the tranquility of this area.

• A visit to Casas do Morgadio, a very peculiar local accommodation, which combines the history of several generations dedicated to wine production with their sophisticated accommodations, designed to welcome those who visit. 1.3km away from the Biscoitos bathing area, Casas do Morgadio is happy to welcome us for a visit to the various areas of the property: the vineyards, the agricultural spaces, the distillery and, of course, the room for wine tasting, trying regional products and socializing.

We also suggest that you look for Mr. José Pereira “dos Cestos”, one of the very few artisans dedicated to keeping alive the craft of basketry, once so prominent in this parish, due to the connection between the production of baskets and the harvest of grapes.

Apenas oito lugares no mundo produzem vinhos vulcânicos.
A mineralidade e vinhos vulcânicos caminham lado a lado.
