São Jorge, designated as the island of the fajãs, is a destination for nature lovers. This itinerary is perfect for those who love to venture into nature, and discover the most idyllic, lesser-known places, far from urban centers.

The visit starts in the Fajã dos Cubres Viewpoint. From here, it is possible to see Fajã dos Cubres and Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo, two detrital fajãs in the northern coast of the island. So what makes them so special? Let's head down and see for ourselves.

The name of the first fajã comes, precisely, from a plant with small yellow flowers named Cubres, very abundant in this area of the island. In 1757, Cubres Village, considered one of the most beautiful villages in Portugal, was completely destroyed by an earthquake. After being rebuilt and repopulated over the years, it suffered great damage, once again, with yet another earthquake, in 1980. Despite all its vicissitudes, the villagers still returned to rebuild their homes, and whoever visits this place can understand why. Although isolated and difficult to access, its surrounding lands are very productive, and despite not having a port, it is a very privileged place for fishing.

We continue along this stunning trail to the Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo, a route with mesmerizing views, although it can be a little demanding for less experienced hikers. In fact, it might be precisely this isolation that makes this fajã feel like such a paradisiacal place, where tranquility and peace take over our senses. Here, we can visit the Lagoa da Caldeira de Santo Cristo, classified as a Protected Landscape area and a place of cultural and scenic interest. Well-known for the presence of clams in its waters, the most famous delicacy of this fajã, it is also an important place for resident bird species, as well as for some migratory birds.

We also suggest visiting the Interpretation Centre of Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo, where you can learn about the geological, biological and human history of the fajãs in São Jorge, particularly, about Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo and Fajã dos Cubres. Having kept the original and traditional façade of the building, this space features a booth with multimedia content that will take you on a journey through time, going back to the formation of the fajãs to the present day.
